Beauty in architecture

an exploration and understanding

Personally, the concept of beauty in architecture was somewhat of a new topic for me. My original concept of "beauty" was derived from my love and appreciation of archives and especially architectural archival drawings. Very literally, this was as far as I had thought on the matter. However, after thinking more in depth and researching architectural precedents, my concept of beauty began to grow. I came up with the concept of "uncovering history" as a starting point. I developed this idea further, to my comprehensive final perception of beauty in architecture: Old in New, or New in Old. I was able to find two precedent studies which perfectly described my concept. The Beineke Rare Book Library at Yale University perfectly embodied my idea for "Old in New." This is becuase the "old" books and manuscripts are beautifully displayed in a "new" architectural shell. The Seleyx Dominican Bookstore in The Netherlands embodied the "New in Old" concept. This is because a new, fully modern structure was constructed within the walls of a centuries old cathederal. Both examples were stunning pieces of architecture in their own unique way. Through this research I was able to understand the importance of history, while incorporating new, modern, and contemporary uses for otherwise forgotten, or sometimes mistreated, pieces of history.
