umbrella installation

While umbrellas are most commonly used to protect from rain and other inclement weather, disassembled, the simplistic remains of these seemingly everyday object can transform into materials of unlikely uses. By exploring the different uses in materiality and structure of the umbrellas, the students in the section were able to creatively design and construct and installation, with no prior planning. By exploring the life cycle of an umbrella, the suspended piece depicted an umbrella from birth to death. While the installation itself used very few tools or additional materials, the piece was fully supported and connected using pieces from the disassembled umbrellas. This piece also explored the ways in which the installation could move, which was an unexpected feature. In all, this exploration in the constructability and durability of umbrellas in unexpected uses created a precedent for the use of everyday objects in unexpected and extraordinary uses.
