Philadelphia + NYC

cap field trip week 2015

For CAP Field Trip Week 2015, the ARCH 301 Studio, led by professor Ana De Brea traveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and New York City, New York. As a student studying Historic Preservation, a trip to Philadelphia was right very exciting to me. As a group, we viewed many of Philadelphia's unique pieces of architecture, including: Independence Hall, Eastern State Penitentary, Cathederal Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Love Park, Philadelphia Magic Gardens, The Philadelphia Musuem of Art, and The Barnes Foundation. Tours of the Mutter Museum, University of Pennsylvania, Temple University and the architecture firm Kieran Timberlake proved valuable experiences from the typical tourist attractions. In addition to Philadelphia, we also had to opportunity to travel to New York City. Personally, this was my first vist it the Big Apple (and Philly as well), so this trip was full of first time experiences. Arriving early in New York, we experienced nearly every iconic piece of architecture NYC had to offer. We began our day in the Time Square area. For me (being born on New Years Eve) this area of the city is kind of special to me. Luckily, the iconic New Years Ball was still still prominently on display! We continued toward 6th Ave and Radio City Music Hall. As we continued, we approached the Musuem of Modern Art. While I think we all wished to have fully experienced the MOMA and its famous collections, the gift shop and lobby had to suffice. We continued our journey down 5th Avenue, passing by iconic storefronts, Trump Tower, and ending at the iconic, glass enclosed Apple Store, accross the street from Central Park and the historic Plaza Hotel. At this point, we proceeded to Central Park for lunch from various food carts. A quick walk through Central Park led us through Columbus Circle and in the direction of Hearst Tower. We continued (for what seemed like forever) down 8th Avenue en route to the High Line walking path. Passing landmarks such as Madison Square Garden and the Empire State Building in the background, we had finally arrived at the High Line. After briefly walking through the Meatpacking District, we took the Subway toward One World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial. We finished with dinner and another subway ride across town toward Rockefeller Plaza. For me, I think this was my favorite part of our visit to New York. Rockefeller Plaza is the headquarters of NBC and NBC News. I am a huge Today Show fan, so being able to see (for the first time in person) the Today Show studio and plaza was an unforgettable experience for me! We finished our whirlwind tour of New York City with another walk past Times Square, as we approached our bus station, and departed for Philadelphia. In all, the visits to Philadelphia and New York City were unforgettable experiences for me. Being my first time in both cities, I am already planning my next visit to each.
